Kill B.0.B. - a learn-by-play demo of Vault RPG

In Vault you play as a Mercenary in a dystopian future full of magic, cybernetics, and mega-corporations. In this learn-by-play demo, you and some friends will learn the core system of Vault by foiling the efforts of a rogue A.I. and his cult of followers.

We recommend 4-6 people, from ages 13+, and of any experience level for this adventure. We’re going to jump right into the good stuff, but more rules and information about the game can be found in the later sections of this booklet.

In this learn-by-play demo, you will play as a mercenary who has already taken a job to help eliminate one of the largest threats to humanity, B0B. You will get to spend some brief time with our NPC Contact and Infiltrate systems and, if you choose, do some light roleplaying during the mission.

Our premade characters have their abilities and statistics pre-calculated for this demo to create a balanced team of mercs, each with their own specializations.

This demo mostly focuses on our combat system and boss encounters, which we’ve designed to be more interesting than just a bigger bucket of HP.

We hope you enjoy our demo adventure! Vault RPG is designed to combine relatable near-future cyberpunk. elements with the mysterious and heroic nature of fantasy. One night, you might be working out the details of a bullet train heist, and the next, hunting down a cult of blood mages. Players will find fun and flavorful ways to invest in their characters and improve them often. Our system also focuses on giving players meaningful choices both in and out of combat. Storytellers or GMs will have tools to keep the focus on their story, run gritty fast-paced fights, and present challenges that force players to think on their feet. This system favors stories of urban fantasy, crime, horror, detective drama, and even the convergence of technology and ethics. 

If you are unfamiliar with how tabletop Role Playing Games work, fear not, there will be plenty of explanations along the way, and our premade characters won't feel basic or underpowered. This demo focuses on teaching the basics of the game, but the full game gives the players a robust character system full of choices to make just the character you want to be. It also gives Game Masters additional tools to deliver those plot hooks and twists by way of contacts, downtime, and a streamlined skill system.

As a player in the full version of Vault, you will create a desperate mercenary who uses what and whom they know to survive a harsh dystopia of the storytellers' design. We have worked to pack this game with meaningful choices that allow you to fully realize your playstyle. Whether you want to be the toughest cyborg on the street or a 3-foot tall winged sniper who can also throw fireballs, Vault provides the mechanics and the storytelling space to give you that experience! While out of game choices may take some time to think through, in-game decisions can be made quickly and will be the difference between life and death.

The choice between potent magical mastery and a fevered search for the newest tech is a meaningful one. Some characters will even choose to forgo magic and machinery in favor of raw natural talent and hard-earned experience. Whatever route you take, you will find ways to make that character your own. The Vault app itself is a state-of-the-art work repository. It can help you find the kinds of jobs that make your adrenal glands churn and your bank account tingle. Our patented no reprisal contracts extend to nearly all the major corporations and even a few of the lesser ones to keep you from needing to look over your shoulder while you are spending those “easily” earned rewards. The process is quite simple: search through the jobs available, find one your team can pull off, finalize terms with the Patron, complete the job within the terms set, and get paid directly from us.

If things go awry and failure occurs, after a short rest period you will be able to choose a new mission for you and your surviving team members. As you succeed, higher priority and larger stake missions will show up for your selection. We look forward to working with you in the future and remember, until the contract is complete none of the Corpos are required to pull their punches, so do be careful out there!
